Passive valves do not require additional power to be driven, and are generally installed inside the muffler or on the connecting pipe at the mid-end. It is mainly composed of a spring and a baffle. When the engine speed is low, the exhaust airflow is small, which is not enough to overcome the tension of the spring to blow the baffle up, and the exhaust pipe is blocked by the baffle, so the back pressure becomes larger.

When the engine speed is high, the exhaust airflow is large enough to blow the baffle up, and the exhaust pipe is fully opened at this time, and the back pressure is low, thus ensuring the power output of the engine. Active valves require additional power to drive, generally installed on the tail pipe, and are divided into electric valves and pneumatic valves according to different driving methods.

The electric valve is driven by a motor, and the pneumatic valve is driven by a vacuum pump. Similar to passive valves, when the engine speed is low, the valve is closed to increase the back pressure, and when the engine speed is high, the valve is opened to reduce the back pressure.

Compared with the passive valve, the active valve has lower back pressure at high speed, because the opening energy of the valve is provided by the battery, which will not cause the power loss of the engine, and the passive valve requires a part of the energy from the engine to overcome the tension of the spring, but this part of the energy is very small and can be ignored.

Therefore, modification is not a simple matter. Any modification requires an understanding of the influencing factors and principles behind it.
